Tips for Caring for Comforters & Bedspreads

Unfortunately, comforters and bedspreads are not always covered by the Care Label Laws, and as a result, caring for them can be difficult.

When purchasing: Make sure down or fiber-filled bedspreads are well-quilted. Preferably, quilting stitches should run both vertically and horizontally with quilting lines about eight to 10 inches apart. If not quilted then at least tacked well throughout. Many comforters are not quilted or tacked, which creates a greater stress on the construction during washing.

Construction: The fabrics some comforters are made from are of an unstable weave and seams will open or cording will pull away from the edge seams when they are put under stress of cleaning. Also check the strength of the stitching. Poor construction with loose stitching can allow the filling to shift during the care process.

Filling: The filling may shift when comforters do not have the proper construction to hold the filling in place when cleaned. If your clean comforters do not have good hold points for the filling (downs not included), it can shift and wad up making the comforter lumpy bunched up in some areas and flat in other areas. Down comforters, as long as they have sewn in baffles do not typically have this problem.

Fabric Finish: Cleaning also could remove the comforter's finish. The finish is added to the fabric to improve wrinkle resistance and/or the fabric's body. Sometimes when these are cleaned the finish is removed, leaving a formerly crisp fabric limp or wrinkled; rayon's and silk's particularly.
